  • What are the various types of hackathons embraced by developers?

Is the hackathon a global event? Do the developed applications in such event need to be accessible from different mobile platforms?

Various types of hackathons depend on criteria:

Location:- in-person hackathon- online hackathonOrganizer:- single company (e.g. Microsoft, AWS)- pro-hackathon company (e.g. Angelhack)- conference-attached (e.g. TechCrunch, DeveloperWeek)Sponsorship:- company sponsored- government sponsoredReason:- engage developers for their dev platform (e.g. Dropbox APIs)- recruiting developers- non-profit (e.g. women safety)- investment/curate for incubator (e.g. Launch Hackathon)

Is the hackathon a global event? Most of them are not since in-person hackathons are run at a particular location. Some are global. For example, South Korean government ran a global hackathon last year and even flew people in to Seoul! Hackathons that are run purely online tend to be global as anyone can participate. Many hackathons on devpost.com are like that.

Do the developed applications in such event need to be accessible from different mobile platforms? Not necessarily. Depending on the hackathon and limitations, you can build desktop, web, mobile, or even IoT/hardware hacks. If you are building a web hack, obviously making it mobile-accessible and friendly gives you more exposure.
