Like a lot of high school students, I wish to be a doctor. But, I know enough to realize that most change their minds in college.
What kind of high school students do you see being successful in this 8-year track? Are there any studies done to see if those in these types of 8-year programs are more successful doctors?
Academically talented high school students who have had a passion for people and for the biomedical and social sciences or liberal arts, who and who have had authentic experience with healthcare, illness and/or the suffering of others tend to have the maturity/readiness to make the decision to become a physician at 18. Conversely, the students who are academically gifted and are "pressured/pushed" by their parents to pursue a career in medicine are often miserable during med school and they may or may not "hang on" and graduate.
