  • Can I title myself as a software engineer even though this wasn't my formal job title?

I have had my own small company for a couple years now and I came to the realization that I was doing the job of a software engineer. I want to title myself as one but I' not 100% sure if I can. I wouldn’t say that I am a great programmer as a lot of what I have done is related to diagrams, specs and related docs.

I’d like to see what the CareerDean community has to say about proclaiming your own job title. Thanks.

I imagine you mean titling yourself on your resume, I think you could say CEO/FOUNDER and also put your area/responsibilities were acting as lead software engineer and especially if you explained what the company did it would make sense. You were a software engineer but you were also the founder which is great!
