I can think of two right off the top of my head:
James O'Barr with "The Crow." The story was amazingly written and produced an amazing movie, even with the death of Brandon Lee (I still miss him to this day).
And then of course Robert Kirkman's "The Walking Dead". We all know how well that's evolved.
As a writer in the zombie apocalypse world, TWD, as been a great influence on my writing, because it is written intelligently and offers more than just groaning, walking corpses.
Both "The Crow" and "The Walking Dead" offer layers of story: hard decisions, moral vs survival, tension and histories.
