  • Can I combine networking and programming and make a decent living as a freelancer?

I want to become a software developer, but I am worried with the ever-changing trends in the industry. How do you ensure that you are always up to date?

Oh for sure. That's totally possible. Just keep your eyes open and read the news. Look a mile down the pipeline in technology and keep a pulse on trends. You don't have to implement this cutting edge stuff but you should know as much as you can about it because it may eventually become relevant you in some way shape or form.

As far as programming, the logic behind programming is all the same really. Once you know one, you can pick up the others in concept pretty quickly. It may take a while with syntax and best practices but that will come with practice and education. The languages are all different yes, but the core languages have been around for a long time. I learned C back in high school and I could still go out and program in it. Same with C++, C#, VB.NET, Java, HTML5, etc. I mean, probably even QBasic, but yeah, I wouldn't chase that market...

I like programming. Maybe look at joining a software company that does something you have a passion for? Then after a while, strike out on your own? That would be a risk adverse approach to curb your fears I think.
