Newbies who want to build a business helping others market their company or brand often need mentoring and resources. What are some of the top resources you use when looking to educate yourself about online marketing? Is web design important or can someone make a living in online marketing without having to know how to build a website? For example, can being semi-knowledgeable with WordPress suffice?
Know your niche and know when to reach out. I happen to be a technical digital marketer (I can read html and parse a trace-route) with a good business sense (I can read and create a P&L statement). I also love data and my curiosity can consume a few hours as I parse through a website. In college I loved advertising, specifically Olgilvy on Advertising and another book called "Which ad pulled best." All that being said I'm not a great brand marketer. I'm getting better, but this is an area where I reach out to mentors for occasional advice, and even hire out for a brand marketer when I have a specific project that needs addressing.
Build a network of marketers you can reach out to when needed. Meet with them all the time to keep up to date on key-learnings and industry movements and new technology. I'm a part of a few groups in Seattle that meet monthly or quarterly. Just keep moving and learning.
