I love to play with my daughter, however as I do a lot of programming after work its very hard to focus with a little kiddie jumping and running around the room all the time and on the other hand as bad as I feel not being able to spend as much time with her as I would want, I also feel bad leaving all the caretaking to my wife when I'm home after my day job working on some side projects till late. As a person involved in bunch of open source overtime projects, how do you approach dev - fatherhood thing ?
I have a separate room that is exclusively known as Daddy's Office. There is a busy light outside they can see if I'm really busy. http://www.hanselman.com/blog/IsDaddyOnACallABusyLightPresenceIndicatorForLyncForMyHomeOffice.aspx
My wife and I take turns. She has her hobbies and side things also, so we go back and forth. Tonight she'll put the kids down and I'll have "Daddy Day" and I'll have it without any guilt. Next week she'll have Mommy Dad and I'll be with the kids. I'm shocked when I hear that some couples go months or years without time off. That's why there is (usually) two of you.
